Absorption Testing – Bio Fresh

Results of bio fresh absorption testing:

 

The Case in Mention

A test to examine the ability of the additive Bio Fresh Masterbatch to absorb ethanol and ethylene at room temperature

 

The Tested Material

5 kg of rolls of white Masterbarch, about 3 mm in diameter, about 3 mm long, sealed in a polyethylene bag.

The Method of Testing

Determining absorption capacity

5 to 10 grams of Masterbatch were dried in a drying oven for 3 hours at a temperature of 105ºC.  Afterwards, the contents were placed into to an open container inside the drying oven (a volume of about 4.8 liters).

 

Determining the Level of Ethylene Absorption

The drying oven was flushed with ethylene and stored for a total of 30 days.  The level of ethylene absorption was determined by measuring weight and by gas chromatography (by means of the Headspace technology – heating up to 90ºC for 30 minutes).  Device number 319, dividing column B:  4 determining tests were conducted each time.

 

Determining the Level of Ethanol Absorption

A container filled with ethanol was placed into a drying oven and stored for a total of 25 days. The level of ethanol absorption was determined by measuring weight and by gas chromatography (by means of the Headspace technology – heating up to 90ºC for 30 minutes).  Device number 319, dividing column GS-B:  4 determining tests were conducted each time.

Conclusion

The tested Bio Fresh Masterbatch indicated an ethanol absorption level of 2.14 +/-0.22 Gew % after a storage period of 25 days at room temperature in an ethanol saturated atmosphere.  The ethylene absorption level was 0.54 +/- 0.14 Gew % after a storage period of 30 days at room temperature in an ethylene atmosphere.  The measured values noted for weights, particularly the weights of ethanol, were somewhat higher than the values noted from the gas chromatography testing.  This is due to the fact that water absorption is also measured in this method of measuring weights.
